Twist the Words

Emily Stellar
Track 2 – Songs of the Desert
Why must you twist the words just to kill the light?
Flip the frame, make the wrong feel right.
You gas up lies while I spiral down,
Now I second-guess my own damn sound.

Said you’d work three jobs so I could breathe,
I said quit, I got you — but you just see.
Mocked my grind, turned my art to waste,
Told your friends I was just some misplaced phase.
You hold my face down, say truth is pain,
But all I see in the water is your goddamn face.
Twist the words, cut me clean,
Make me doubt what I believe.
Turn my fire into steam —
Gaslight, gaslight, till I can’t even scream.

Twist the words, set the scene,
But you won’t rewrite me.
I had plans you said would tear the thread —
You don’t like them anyway, you said.
Dodging calls, shrinking thin,
Tried to fly but you clipped my wings again.

Said cheat’s no crime, just people who feel —
But if the reel flipped, how would you deal?
You smirked while the scene blurred out,
Left me screaming in a silent shout.
Twist the words, cut me clean,
Make me doubt what I believe.
Turn my fire into steam —
Gaslight, gaslight, till I can’t even scream.

Twist the words, set the scene,
But you won’t rewrite me.
You broke the mirror and blamed my eyes,
Said I’m crazy while feeding me lies.
I held the match, you struck the flame —
Now you’re choking on your own damn gas.
Twist the words, cut me clean,
But I found truth beneath the bleed.
Turn my fire into steam —
I’m the one who fuels the dream.

Twist the words, set the scene,
But you don’t get to rewrite me.
Gaslight, gaslight — I see through your fantasy.
Your ring’s off my hand, but the fire’s still in me.
Freedom tastes sharper than your fantasy.

Now I’m free — that’s the end of your story.
Here’s to my new beginnings.

Conceptual Note:

“Twist the Words” captures the collapse of trust — manipulation, gaslighting, and emotional inversion.
It’s the first real descent into the toxicity that shapes the early half of Songs of the Desert, setting up the contrast for Build Me with Your Fire.
